Copper-polymetallic massive sulphide deposit with evidences of submarine volcanic hydrothermal-sedimentary and porphyry-related skarn mineralization.

A major copper producer in China, operated by the Jiangxi Copper Company Ltd. The open pit mine was scheduled to produce 86,000 tons/year of concentrate (19,000 tons Cu) by 1985. Annual production in 2004 was 3.6 million tons of ore (Papst, 2007).

The Yongping Cu orebodies, containing 1.6 Mt of proven copper reserves, are mainly stratiform (2500 m long, 2000 m wide and 18 m thick on average), parallel with the Yejiawan Formation and hosted in the facture zones between limestone and quartz sandstone in the Upper Carboniferous Yejiawang Formation. The limestone in the Upper Carboniferous Yejiawang Formation undergoing alteration to marble and skarn alteration occurs within the hanging walls of the stratiform orebodies, whereas the quartz sandstone acts as the footwall of the stratiform orebodies, in which there are pyrite-bearing quartz stockwork mineralization. The orebodies occur in seven NS-trending (east-dipping) mineralization zones. Orebody II-4 is the largest and accounts for 60% of the Cu reserve at Yongping.

The major ore bodies were primarily hosted within the Carboniferous Yejiawan Formation, with a small portion occurring in the Chuanshan-Maokou Formation. These ore bodies exhibit a stratiform, sub-stratiform, or lens-shaped distribution, with their occurrence aligning consistently with the formation of ore-bearing rock. The strike of the ore body towards approximately N-S, dipping towards E-SEE, with dip angles ranging between 20°-50° or 60°-70°. The intensity of skarnization and mineralization gradually decreases along the dip direction from the central region downwards. Meanwhile, the presence of magnetite, pyrrhotite, pyrite, and silicified minerals diminishes, while sphalerite and galena progressively become more abundant. The overall trend of the ore body is slightly arched along the central part of the mining area. The deposit consists of 6 primary ore zones (I ∼ VI) and one secondary ore zone (VII). Among them, the II ore zone is the main ore zone, with the copper reserves accounting for 72 % of the total reserves in the entire area. It is further divided from top to bottom into 3 ore bodies, respectively named II2, II3, and II4. Each ore body exhibits stratiform or sub-stratiform, integrating and synchronously folding with the middle part of the Yejiawan Formation. The II4 ore body is stable and large, and it is the main ore body in the main ore belt, accounting for 60.69 % of the total amount of copper in the entire area. The main elements of the ore are Cu, S, and W, with average grades of Cu 0.74 %, S 14.12 %, and WO3 0.102 %.
The ore types are mainly skarn type, and some skarnized marble type, marble type, metamorphic sand shale type, and granite type.

Contain approximately 232 Mt of ore at 0.69% Cu, 0.12% W (equivalent to 0.15% 109 WO₃), and 0.08% Mo.

Cu 1.77 Mt @ 0.69%; WO3 ∼133,000 t 0.15%, Mo > 150,000 t 0.1%

Note:
In some references, this mine is listed as "Shuiping Mine", which is obviously the result of an erroneous translation (mistaking 永, "yong", for the similar character 水, "shui").
