Empire Mine
The Mount Henry gold mine is north-west of the old Dundas townsite, now marked only with an information sign.
The anomaly is 1.9 kilometres long, 6 to 10 metres wide, and dips 65 to 70 degrees west. The host rock is banded iron formation, with minor meta-basalts, and dolerite. Sulphide mineralisation is from a trace to 10%. The predominant sulphide is pyrrhotite, with minor pyrite, arsenopyrite, chalcopyrite, and marcasite.
From the early days the lease was known as the Empire, initially developed in the 1890's. Lease 12 acres. At the time it was described as a dyke formation carrying gold, although there is some doubt on the accuracy of this.
An open cut had been developed 85 feet across the lode, 12 feet wide, and 40 feet deep. The formation it states is ferrugineous quartz, micaceous schist, and iron silicate. South of the open cut a tunnel had been driven 65 feet into the hill, showing fine gold. There was also about 1 mile of costeaning.
The initial crushing from a quartz vein resulted in 4.25 g/t. Three more crushings to 1898 came to 12 tonnes 5 dwt, 10 tonnes 12 dwt and 9 tonnes 2 dwt. By 1898, the mine was on exemption seeking more capital.
