St. Agnes Gold Reef Ltd

St. Agnes is a historic gold mining lease from the 1890's. Located north of the St Agnes Blocks lease, which was to become the Valkyrie mine, and still noted today on mine maps as the Valkyrie prospect.

St Agnes was developed by English company St Agnes Gold Mines. A report on the mine in 1898 states a lot of useless work had been done on the mine, and at that stage it was under exemption. The company was floated in 1895 with £60,000 capital. They owned 6 leases totalling 50 acres.

The leases were named St Agnes, St Agnes South, St Just, Bonanza, Bonanza Block, and St Agnes Block. Later in the article it proceeds to describe St Agnes Block as owned by a separate company, so whether the later Valkyrie mine was located on the St Agnes or St Agnes Block leases is open to question. It is possible the later company controlled both.

At the start of development, 4 shafts were sunk. However when the 10 head battery was erected, they dug an adit into the hill to the 60 foot level, and constructed a tramway through this then down the hill to the battery. Crushing started in November 1897.

The quartz in the reef was laminated and friable. At one point the reef splits, and here it is highly mineralised. Between November 1897 to August 1898 the mine had crushed 1,510 tonnes of ore for 923 ounces at 12 dwt.
