Ordinary Chondrite, Low-Iron (L4)
Fell, 9 June 1954; 305.5 g
After falling very late on a long summer day a small meteorite (108.8 g) was immediately dug up with a somewhat larger fragment (196.7 g) found on the following day. These two meteorite fragments were purchased for 300 Swedish crowns each for Sweden's Museum of Natural History. The sounds of the arriving meteorite had been heard over a 100 km wide region and apparently delivered a number of smaller stones which were not collected. Olivine composition (Fa24), the presence of 'bronzite' pyroxene, and bulk iron (21 wt%) are all indicative of Hökmark's membership in the L (low bulk Fe) chondrite geochemical group. However, as a small 'ordinary chondrite' Hökmark has not been studied in great detail. The sounds of the incoming approach have, however, been reported in surprising detail for such an old fall [Cf. Liszka (2008)].
Hökmark is one of 9 witnessed Swedish falls listed at the Meteoritical Bulletin Database (as of October 2015). All 9 falls are ordinary chondrites, but only Hökmark and Ekeby have been classified as exactly 'L4' chondrites. Both specimens of Hökmark have been kept at the Museum of Natural History in Stockholm (Naturhistoriska riksmuseet).
