GPS coordinates are approximate.
Pre-Roman excavations for iron ore and relevant dumps, located along the woody northern slope of Monte Calvi, on the left side of Valle delle Rozze (municipalities of Castagneto Carducci and San Vincenzo). The brown iron ore (limonite) originated from oxidised skarn bodies containing sulphides (northern fringes of the large skarn masses of the Temperino-Lanzi mining area).
Monte Calvi is a mountain of 646 m s.l.m. in the province of Livorno.
Located mainly in the municipality of Campiglia Marittima, it also touches the municipalities of San Vincenzo, Castagneto Carducci, and Suvereto. The summit falls within the territory of the municipality of San Vincenzo.
It is the highest mountain in the province of Livorno (as far as the continental territory is concerned), while on the island of Elba there are some peaks above 600 m asl. (the highest is Monte Capanne). On the other hand, Montecristo Island is exactly the same altitude.
It has also been recognized as a Site of Community Interest (SIC), due to its high floristic and faunal diversity. The vegetation is typically Mediterranean; in the lower range (up to 400 m in height) there are olive groves and Mediterranean scrub. Numerous species of wild orchids are concentrated in the area.
