The South Windarra deposit is 10 kilometres south of the Mount Windarra Ni Mine. It is 2 kilometres south of the Leonora-Laverton Road, and just south of the entrance road to the Mount Windarra mine. The site contains an abandoned water filled open pit and tailings heaps.

South Windarra contains a resource of 0.90 Mt @ 1.14 Ni for 10 298 Ni tonnes.

The deposit is below a layer of alluvium 30 metres thick. The South Windarra ore shoots are up to 20 metres thick, to 1300 metres long and extend 300 metres down dip. Pyrite and violarite dominates the ore in the top half of the pit. The shoots are found in meta-olivine peridotite, 35 metres to 130 metre thick in the western portion. Most of the mineralisation is found in the 50 metres basal portion of the ultramafics.

Units at South Windarra include granular quartz feldspathic rocks, a banded iron base and intermediate Footwall. The mineralised unit is a 80 to 150 metre thick sequence of siliceous and banded sediment containing variable amounts of quartz, grunerite, actinolite, magnetite, albite, chlorite, pyrrhotite, pyrite and garnet.

The South Windarra deposit was discovered in 1970 by a consortium consisting of Union Oil, Hanna and Homestake. Western Mining developed the deposit from 1974 to 1978 and again 1981 to 1991, both as an open pit and underground operation.
