The McTavish Reservoir was built in stages, beginning in 1853, to store drinking water for the city of Montreal. It is situated on the lower slope of Mont Royal just above the main campus of McGill University. The reservoir site was blasted out of Ordovician-age Trenton limestone intruded by Cretaceous-age dikes belonging to the Monteregian Hills Petrographic Province (which includes Mont Saint-Hilaire). One of these dikes provided the specimens that enabled Graham (1908) to definitively determine the crystallographic and optical properties of dawsonite.
In some literature the reservoir is referred to as the Lower Reservoir because of the existence of another reservoir higher up on Mont Royal, and also as the Montreal Reservoir. In 1954 the site of the then roofed-over reservoir was designated a municipal park and named Rutherford Park in honour of Nobel laureate Ernest Rutherford (1871-1937) whose pioneering work on radioactivity had been conducted nearby on the McGill University campus.
