Ordinary low iron Chondrite (L6).
Fell, 20 November 1769; 19 kg.

After detonations a stone fell. The meteorite has been referenced several times since it fell, but has not drawn much attention in recent decades in the more widely published scientific literature. Early studies consumed material for chemical analysis and some fragments may have been lost or destroyed during the two world wars.

Mauerkirchen was the first of the now 269 confirmed witnessed meteorite falls classified exactly as an L6 ordinary chondrite at the Meteoritical Bulletin Database (as of early January 2016). Two additional Austrian L chondrites, Prambachkirchen (L6) and Lanzenkirchen (L4), were observed to fall in the early 20th Century. The L chondrites are the largest group of witnessed falls with the L6 subgroup the most common petrologic type.

As of the year 2000, the largest remaining mass (2 kg) was at the University of GÃķttingen with moderate 400-600 g masses at London and Vienna with scattered smaller masses elsewhere.
