Niagara is part of the Kookynie Goldfield. This section is west south-west of Kookynie, between the town and the Morapoi indigenous community.

Gold was discovered in the area by Northmore and Doolette in 1895. A town called Niagara rapidly developed, although only ever amounting to two streets, and by the very early 1900's had closed down in favour of Kookynie.

The main Niagara lode borders the Kookynie Road, centred on the Niagara Dam turn-off. Most mine sites are north of the Kookynie Road and railway line. These stretch in generally parallel east-west lines for several kilometres. The area contains innumerable historic shafts, small pits, and a few remnant battery sands from the larger mines.

The name comes from a 3 metre ledge crossing the Niagara Creek. It was named as a joke, the small waterfall only running occasionally during heavy rains. South of the Niagara location is the Niagara Dam, a popular picnic and camping site. It was constructed by C.Y. O'Connor for the railway line, the same man who built the water pipeline from Mundaring to Kalgoorlie.
