Ordinary chondrite (H5)
Fell, 6 July 1950; 725 g
After falling near the village of Garau, a meteoritic stone was broken up and then presented to a district head before eventually reaching the Geological Survey. The meteorite is dominated by olivine (Fa19) and orthopyroxene (Fs16) with quite minor amounts of clinopyroxene and albitic plagioclase (An10). Chondrules — mostly barred olivine (BO) and radiating pyroxene (RP) — are present, but usually small (0.5mm ). Fe-Ni metal and troilite are present as irregular grains between the chondrules irregular. Chromite, copper, and an unidentified phosphate are also reported.
The composition of olivine and orthopyroxene as well as total iron (27.2 wt%) are characteristic of the ordinary H chondrite geochemical group. The H group of ordinary chondrites (ordinary chondrites relatively high in total Iron) account for more than 30% of all meteorite falls. As of 2000 the main mass had been held at the Geological Survey of Nigeria for approximately 5 decades.
Nota bene: Geidem is the name of the largest nearby town, but Geidam is still used for some local landmarks as well as for the meteorite.
