Köppen climate type:
In the Tropicana deposit, mineralisation is associated with late biotite and pyrite alteration. The main ore zone is 63 metres thick, hosted by quartzo-feldspathic gneiss, with sub-ordinate 3-5 metre thick discontinuous mineral lenses hosted with a garnet gneiss Hanging Wall.
The high grade lodes trend east to south-east, intersecting with the easterly plunging line. The deposit is separated from the Havana deposit by the south-east to east striking Muddler, Swizzler and Cobbler shear zones. The southern part of the Tropicana deposit is displaced 300 metres west between the Swizzler Shear Zone to the north, and the Muddler Shear Zone to the south.
The Tropicana deposit has one main ore zone, and sub-ordinate thin 3-5 metre discontinuous mineralised lenses. Under 0.5 g/t gold is also found in the garnet gneiss dominated Hanging Wall. The main ore zone is 2 to 50 metres thick, averaging 30 metres, striking for 1.5 kilometres, and dipping 20-45 degrees south-east.
The deposits are hosted by meta Fe chert, pegmatites, mafic granulite, garnet gneiss, and quartzo-feldspathic gneiss.
The meta Fe chert is finely laminated. massive, or planar to folded banding, with coarse quartz, amphibolite, grunerite, biotite-sericite-chlorite-magnetite, garnet bands and semi massive pyrite-pyrrhotite.
The pegmatites contain feldspar, quartz, biotite, garnet and amphibolite. The meta granulite contains clinopyroxene, orthopyroxene, hornblende, garnet, patchy chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and magnetite.
The immediate host rocks to the deposits show polyphase deformation resulting in complex lithologies. Mineralised zones are principally in the quartzo-feldspathic gneiss and pegmatites, the ore body pinching and swelling along strike. This is underlain by a mixed package of quartzo-feldspathic gneiss, garnet gneiss, granulite and amphibolite. Garnet gneiss is prevalent near the Hanging Wall, most notably at the Havana deposit where it is 200 metres thick. The Footwall from the top shows garnet gneiss, granulite and amphibolite, with a lower grade of gold mineralisation on both walls.
