The Mulline Goldfield is 90 kilometres west of Menzies. It is a two kilometres wide, 15 kilometres long band of workings, trending north-south. Innumerable historic shafts exist north and west of the Evanston-Mulline and Davyhurst-Mulline road junction. The central and southern portions have some modern abandoned pits, and shallow oxide pits, mainly west of the Davyhurst-Mulline Road.
Gold was discovered in the area in 1891 by James Speakman and Ryan. They had set out from Southern Cross. East of Southern Cross, it was one of the first discoveries of gold, one year before the famous Coolgardie goldrush. Their find was called Off Chance, near Ularring Rock, at the southern end of the field.
The most important mine on the goldfield, both historically and in modern times is the Lady Gladys. The northern end of the field is a mass of historic shafts, a few historic small shallow pits, occasional rusting bits of mining machinery and a few miner graves. On the ground evidence would indicate far more activity than the limited information found about the goldfield. Due to its remote location at the time, the goldfield struggled until 1898 when a ten head state battery was erected.
The town of Mulline grew up at the junction named above. Early Twentieth century writers describe two hotels and several businesses, as a sleepy place, where the most exciting thing to happen during the day is a dog barking. Little remains other than building foundations, and minor stone walls.
The battery sand remnants can be seen bordering the south of the road a few hundred metres to the east. The state battery was erected in 1898. The private company involved then immediately went into liquidation, leaving its employees unpaid. The usual complaints from prospectors about mismanagement and gold being lost was levelled at the battery, but this was not unusual on prospector fields. The battery sands were processed in 1941 by J.A. Cocher, 810 tonnes for only 64 ounces of gold.
