Wundowie is a small town in the Darling Ranges, 67 kilometres east of Perth and 33 kilometres west of Northam. It is a few kilometres north of the Great Eastern Highway.
It is named after the nearby Woondowing Spring, indigenous for ' to lie down'.
The State Government constructed a blast furnace and wood distillation plant to produce charcoal in 1943, and a planned town was constructed for the work force. The iron works opened in 1948. In 1974 the plant was sold to Agnew Clough Limited for a vanadium project, but this closed down in 1981, after only seeing active mining for about one year.
The plant remains, and can be seen from the road, but is fenced and off limits. It would make for a suitable tourist attraction pending safety issues, but little money gets invested with industry related tourism in Western Australia.
