Greed knows no boundaries. Around 1897 it was found the alluvial gold leads (alluvial gold found at depth in gravel) were trending towards the established cemetery at Kanowna. After much pressure from prospectors, the Mines Department decided to open the cemetery to mining.
On the given day thousands gathered, and at the signal of a police officer, there was a mad sprint for the cemetery to peg claims. What resulted was great confusion, and the Warden sat day and night for three weeks, sorting out disagreements over claims.
The area became a rabbit warren of diggings, with graves and coffins turfed up and tossed aside. The area produced thousands of pounds worth of gold.
