South Lead refers to an area of deep alluvial bearing gravel found at depth under the surface. It was one of several leads in the small area of a few kilometres square which makes up the goldfield surrounding the former Kanowna town site.
The first lead was Fitzroy, discovered in June 1897, and shortly after several other leads were uncovered. They were all largely worked out for alluvial gold by the end of 1898.
One source claims South Lead was one of the richest alluvial patches ever uncovered. The most successful claims were Minter's, the Swedes, Macdonald's, Hugh's and party, Dobson and Dorrington's.
