Ordinary chondrite, veined (LL5; S5; W0)
Fell, 4 August 1835; 700 g

A 700 g mass & several smaller stones were recovered after a bolide and detonations at Cirencester. Fresh hand specimens reveal a compact light surface with thin dark veins. Indistinct chondrules, often elongated, and chondrule fragments merge into a fine-grained recrystallized matrix. Relic chondrules include those with radial pyroxene (RP), barred olivine (BO), and porphyritic olivine pyroxene (POP) textures. Olivine grains and twinned clinopyroxene are set in a matrix with turbid, devitrified glass. Fe-Ni metal and troilite are found as interstitial patches and as blebs within the matrix. Compositionally, total iron (20.24 wt%) and olivine (Fa28) are characteristic of the H-chondrite geochemical group. Minor amounts of chromite and diopsidic pyroxene have been reported. Mosaicized olivine with planar fractures indicated strong preterrestrial shocks (level S5).

Aldsworth is the both the 5th oldest and 5th smallest [least massive] of the 20 meteorite falls classified exactly as an LL5 chondrite (in July 2016). The main mass has been at the Natural History Museum in London (~0.5 kg).
