Never will you be closer to looking into the dawn of time for life.
Thombolites and stromatolites represent living relics of some of the earliest forms of life on earth. The largest and most varied collection of these communities is found in Western Australia. Each community is unique. The thrombolites at Lake Clifton are limestone coloured, round, and live in water less salty than the ocean, whereas most live in highly saline water.
They consist of a complex community of cyanobacteria, purple sulphur bacteria, eukaryolic microalgae and true bacteria. These form a thin film on the surface of self made structures where the organisms have precipitated aragonite taken from calcium carbonate in the water.
The thrombolites are found in the northern section of Lake Clifton in the Yalgorup National Park, south of Mandurah. The thrombolites form a 'reef', 6 kilometres long, on the eastern edge of the lake. A jetty has been built so people can view the thrombolites without damaging them.
The thrombolites occur principally along the eastern margins of the lake and some on the north western margin.
