The Ironclad is near the eastern end of Marble Bar, north of the entrance road, and north of the Homeward Bound mine. There were five reefs on the property. The main reef outcroped boldly along a low ridge on the eastern boundary of the lease. The quartz is white, partly stained by Fe.

The original prospectors were W. Matthews, Walsh, Dunsford and Isdell. They sold the mine in 1894, to a Melbourne syndicate who formed the Ironclad Gold Mining Company. They erected a 15 head battery, and the following year purchased the 24 acre South Ironclad lease, totalling 42 acres with the original lease.

It is thought activity did not last much part the late 1890's, as in 1905 the tailings from the old mine were being retreated.
