The Golpejas Sn-(Ta-Li) deposit is a large (5.4 Mt @ 0.15 % Sn, 70 g/t Nb + Ta) exhausted mine that worked several isolated semi-circular bodies of pervasively metasomatically altered leucogranite that was enriched in P, F, Sn, Nb, Ta, Be, Cs, and Li. At a large scale, the intrusion forms a sheet-like body and intrudes Neoproterozoic to Cambrian and Ordovician to Silurian metasediments. At Golpejas, the main mineralization occurs as disseminated cassiterite and CGM in albitized leucogranite lenses, which show a general supergene argillic (kaolinite) alteration, as well as in endo- to exo-granitic Li- and Sn-rich mineralized quartz veins.
The study area comprises a Paleozoic metasedimentary sequence overlain by a predominantly Cenozoic sedimentary cover. The Sn–Nb–Ta Golpejas deposit comprises several sheets of mineralized leucogranite forming a ring-shaped complex with a radius of approximately 900 m in plain view, truncated by a N60E-trending fault. This structure separates two main granitic sheets emplaced at different crustal levels. The northern sheet intrudes Silurian grey to black phyllites, whereas the southern sheet is hosted by Ediacaran phyllites and microbanded metasandstones of the Aldeatejada Formation. The northern sheet is 7–35 m thick and dips outward from the ring structure at 30°–72°, whereas the southern sheet is considerably thicker (up to ∼130 m) and dips more gently but consistently outward. In the northern sheet, a contact aureole of nearly 30 m develops, rich in andalusite porphyroblasts, whereas in the southern sheet, no such aureole is observed. Grain size varies from fine-grained at the margins to medium-grained toward the interior, and a subhorizontal solid-state deformation fabric (S2) is locally well developed, particularly at deeper levels.
