The name Filleigh is sometimes given as the location on old specimens of Wavellite and Variscite. Collectors need to be aware that collectors prior to 1850, often did not record precise location details. Filleigh is the name both of a very small village and a parish. The original collector probably used the name of the closest village and so the true location is most likely to be High Down Hill. There is considerable confusion with Devon Wavellite specimens. The phosphate minerals occur in a layer of rock called the Codden Hill Cherts which extends east-west for many miles but are best developed close to High Down Hill where there are three quarries recorded to have produced mineral specimens.
