“Cairo” is an unincorporated village that is on the border of Lake Township and Plain Township in Stark County. The village was never officially platted even though it gained a post office in 1850 (Perrin, 1881, p. 562). “Cairo” is a suburb of North Canton.
Another village with a similar name was founded as “West Cairo” in Allen County in 1848. When the unincorporated village of “Cairo” in Stark County terminated its post office, the Allen County village of “West Cairo” began to seriously think of changing their name. In 1922, “West Cairo” in Allen County, officially became the new incorporated village of “Cairo” in Ohio. Should the unincorporated village of “Cairo” in Stark County ever become incorporated, it would need to change its name, as the name “Cairo” as already been taken.
