A large north-east to south-west trending water filled open pit. It is about one kilometre south-west of the Duncan Road, where it turns south to south-east. A track to the location continues straight ahead.

The mine produced 761 000 tonnes of ore at 2.09 g/t yielding 52 000 ounces of gold between 1995 to 1997. Gold is associated with the outcropping Butchers Gully Member of the Olympio Formation. PMA Gold Pty Ltd suspended operations in June 1997, probably due to the low gold price at the time.

The nearby Butchers Gully itself was the site of alluvial gold workings shortly after the field was discovered in 1885.

There is a small dam 500 metres west, and a far larger dam built when the Mount Bradley mine was operational, two to five kilometres south, said to contain limited but good camping spots.

If using Doug Stone's, Brockman Goldfield map, the Butcher Creek mine may be located on it incorrectly.
