The Boyup Basin coal deposits are 6 kilometres south of Wilga, and a similar distance northwest of the town of Boyup Brook.

The basin is small at 6 square kilometres. The earliest reference to the site, was government geologist A. Gibb-Maitland, referring to sub-bitumous coal 8 kilometres south-west of Wilga in 1919. The Boyup Basin is north north-west trending, divided by a 500 metre wide basement block. Little is known of the deposit.
