Historic coal mine where the huge Premier pit now is east of Collie. In 1960, Amalgamated Collieries ceased due to losing the government contract to supply coal. Griffin and Western Collieries remained, the latter developing No. 5 in early 1970.
Western Collieries was taken over by CSR (gradually) from 1975 to 1980. The mine was viewed as the quiet achiever on the field, embracing new and larger technology, progressing to large Demag excavators and 180 tonne trucks.
