Historic underground coal mine, opened by CSR, in 1983, now part of the huge Premier pit, east of Collie. In 1989, Wesfarmers purchased the mine. All underground mines in the Collie Basin had closed by 1994, due to costs, with the loss of 239 jobs.
The Premier open cut mine was then opened on the former Western No. 1 to 7 mines. Electric shovels and 240 tonne trucks were used, initially on Pit 1 as strip mining on the Premier coal seams. Subsequently a further four pits were developed. The Premier site was initially mined between 1911 to 1927 as the Premier Colliery, then from the 1950's as the Western mines, before the modern open pits commenced from 1995.
