In the early 1970's the Kalumburu Joint Venture was formed to search for diamonds in the northern Kimberley Western Australia. This consisted of AO (the Australian subsidiary of the London Tin Corporation), Belgian diamond company Sibeka, Jennings Mining and Northern Mining.

After many months only 4 diamonds had been recovered from stream sampling across 3 widely spaced drainages. Northern Mining left, and CRA was brought in with more money. It was renamed the Ashton Joint Venture. Bruno Morelli of Sibeka was sampling the King George River, and discovered a diamond. He exclaimed in French 'We have got the fox by the tail!', and so the site was afterwards called Morelli's Fox.

After much difficulty a heavy separation plant was brought in, and the alluvial sampling programme produced 242 stones totalling 11.08 carats from 22 m3 of gravel.

However it was not economic for a mine, and exploration moved on, discovering a kimberlite pipe at Pteropus Creek in 1976, and soon after diamonds in the Smoke Creek which led to the development of the Argyle Diamond Mine.

Co-ordinates are approximate.
