Little village in the Harz Mountains. Until the end of the 19th century numerous iron ore mines were operating here on small hematite deposits of the Lahn-Dill type. The geological unit the iron deposits belong to is the Oberharzer Diabaszug, an intensely folded, faulted, and imbricated SW-NE striking succession of mafic volcanic rocks, slates, and limestone, in which the ore lenses are intercalated.

The Oberharzer Diabaszug is occasionally cross-cut by small veins, without economic importance, containing also selenium minerals.
