The Foster Shoot is in the middle of a collection of large gold mines, about one kilometre south of the St Ives gold processing plant, near the southern shore of Lake Lefroy.

No outcrop. Discovered in 1967. The komatiite flow is 150 metres thick. The host rock is olivine peridotite, altered to talc-magnesite, and chlorite rocks, with local antigorite.

The footwall is metabasalt, ultramafics, and sulphidic metasediments, locally pillowed, and biotitic in the upper reaches. The Hanging Wall is metabasalt and ultramafic rocks, intruded by biotite-actinolite-phyric sills.

Mineralisation is across a length of 750 metres, dipping 45-65 degrees south-west. Most mineralisation at the deposit is contact ore which grades gradually into barren zones.

Supergene ore contains violarite-pyrite to 280 metres below the surface. Transition ore is in a zone between 165-410 metres below the surface, containing primary dominant pyrrhotite, and sub-ordinate pentlandite, pyrite, and chalcopyrite. Grades reach 5-9% Ni.
