Abandoned gold mine in schist-hosted quartz veins
The meaning behind the Derrel name was not found. Pigott states Coronation and All Nations are the same location, but they were neighbouring leases. All Nations held little gold. The Coronation gold mine is 600 metres west south-west of the Golden Goose mine, and just south of the access track.
Stephens and party put through several crushings between 1903-1905, then Butler/May (surnames) 1908-1909. Much was provided by interested parties to the press about gold being found everywhere. Not all of this was true.
It was reported in 1903, the quartz reef trended north north-west, across the crown of a hill, outcropping 100 yards, averaging 2 feet thick. To the west at 50 feet was a parallel reef, with scattered veins running diagonally into the main reef. After explaining this the (Bathurst Free Press and Mining Gazette, Winnecke's Depot Field, 13/03/1903) states there are reefs OF pearl, emerald and sapphire. It mean't to say there are reefs ON the Pearl, Emerald, and Sapphire (leases), but we wonder how many people invested money in the gold mine, with dreams of pearl oysters being found in the middle of the desert.
Stephens and party were offered 6000 pounds for the lease, on the back of their own self promotion, however they were greedy and demanded 9000 pounds. Shortly after, mining expert, Paul Northey produced a report highly critical about the mine (and others), and all interest in the lease ceased.
The site contains several deep shafts, with soft schist on the western side producing little gold, with two small reefs on the eastern side showing copper stained Fe material worked to a shallow depth, producing 0.7 kg of gold to 1905.
