abandoned gold mine
The original prospector was not found, however shortly after discovery the lease was sold to the two Webb brothers and Thring (surnames) in April 1903. Several crushings occurred to 1905. J. Oakes put through 2 tonnes in 1908. The shaft reached a depth of 85 feet. The lease covered 40 acres. The mine is one kilometre east of the Coorong mine, and several hundred metres south of the access track. The side-track to it is said to be barely passable, although it could be reached by a long walk.
Sydney Cullingworth who inspected the property in early 1903 stated it had several distinct lodes along 300 yards, with another east-west vein near the lease's southern boundary, dipping north, and a length of 300 feet. Vein width increased with depth.
Kurt Gerhardt Johannsen is noted with four other men as conducting mining, and erecting a small plant for a short period across 1932-1933, producing one ounce per week.
The lease contains four inclined shafts down to a maximum depth of 30.5 metres, some pits, trenches, and alluvial diggings along a length of 120 metres. Gold is found with limonite in 5-20 cms wide, east-west trending, north dipping quartz veins, injected along foliation planes of the host banded gneiss, muscovite-quartz-feldspar gneiss, and biotite-feldspar gneiss.
Modern exploration note grades from 1.48 g/t across 1.1 metre to 59.6 g/t across 0.7 metres.
