A coal mine started in 1917 and finally closed in 1988.

The dumps and former mine are completely recultivated. The mine dump, 163 m high, has been transformed into a walking area.

The Winterslag coal mine was one of seven mines in the Kempen coal basin. On November 3, 1906, a coal mining concession was granted with the concession name "Genck-Sutendael". After the discovery of coal in the Limburg Kempen in 1901, various industrial groups applied for a concession for the exploitation, and eight concessions were awarded. The Genck-Sutendael Concession was 3800 hectares in size.

After a number of changes, the company Société anonyme Charbonnages de Winterslag was founded in 1912 for the exploitation of 960 ha of the sub-concession 'Winterslag'. The main shareholders were Charbonnages de Ressaix, a mining group from the Bassin du Centre in Hainaut, owned by Evence Coppée (also a coke oven builder) and the French group Schneider.

This Kempen mining site was located in the Winterslag district of the Belgian city of Genk. The deepening of the shafts for the operation went well, without the problems with quicksand deposits that the other mines had to deal with. On July 28, 1914, just before the outbreak of the First World War, the first lump of coal was extracted from shaft 1.

Under the German occupation, it was possible more or less to continue with the expansion of the mine. In 1917 Winterslag was the first of the mines in the Kempen Basin to go into production.

In 1953 employment was maximum with 6,250 miners.

In 1967 the mine still had an annual production of 1,635,514 tons.

Total mine production was 66,593,000 tons.

The underground floors were at 600, 660, 735, and 850 m.

The coal mine closed permanently on March 31, 1988.

There are still a number of buildings on the mine site that refer to the mining past, including the oldest and the most recently built headframe in Limburg.
