This shaft is situated in the NW 1/4 of section 1, township 36 N., 2 W., well up in the hills, nearly 200 ft. above the valley. It was sunk by the Star mining company upon a well defined crevice run ning N. 80° W. The country rock is principally magnesian limestone. The crevice varies in width from one to seven inches, according to our notes, though Dr. Metcalf reports an average width of as much as 2 ft. It dips from 70 to 80° N., and has been traced a distance of over a mile. The contents of the lode consists of barite, calcite, pyrite, fragments of limestone and of limonite, containing galena and blende, the whole intimately mixed is such a way as to be difficult to concentrate. Some 12 or 15 tons of ore were raised, but still remain on the dump.
