It is assumed A. Scott, the first prospector at the location in 1936 was from New Zealand, as Kia Ora means 'Hello' in Maori (it can also have the meaning of farewell, thanks, well/healthy). In 1949 the lease was purchased by H.J. Turner, with work at the site continuing. Early tonnages were crushed at 'Ghan' battery, but there is no record. Another source states one crushing in 1936 was 82 tonnes achieving 30 ounces. Later crushings was at the General Milling Company of 132 tonnes yielding 120 ounces. To 1951, the No. 3 government battery crushed 652.58 tonnes for the mine yielding 526 ounces.
When inspected in 1954, the site contained three shafts and a small open cut to a depth of 15-40 feet. It would appear this remains at the compact location, together with several small piles of mullock. The mine is about 20 kilometres east of Tennant Creek, and north north-east of the Golden Forty mine, on the northern side of an east-west range of low hills.
The Kia Ora Company was floated in 1954, being a joint venture between four small operators in the area at the time- Merloo Gold Mines NL, Dorea Gold Mines NL, Territory Scheelite NL, Central Mines NL. 250 000 pounds capital was raised, registered in Adelaide. Over the next couple of years, there was drilling, some mining with a shaft re-conditioned, and battery installed. It is assumed on the Kia Ora mine the company was named after, however sources fail to distinguish this. A.F. Campbell headed the joint venture.
Gold is found in crushed chloritised schist along a length of 150 feet and approximately 25 feet wide. The source states the surface contains slate, chlorite siliceous schists, interbedded with schistose-quartz porphyry, with fractures and shears cutting through the schist at various angles. It appears underground workings were not accessed, with no information provided on geology at depth.
