Monte Calvarina, Roncà, Verona, Veneto, Italia
Outcrops of altered basaltic rocks along the road connecting Roncà to Monte Calvarina (an Eocene stratovolcano).
Typical minerals inside the rock vesicles are analcime, chabazite, and barian phillipsite-Ca (wellsite).
GPS coordinates are for the volcano.
Mount Calvarina is a mountain (682 m above sea level) of the Lessini mountains between the provinces of Verona and Vicenza. From an administrative point of view it includes the municipalities of San Giovanni Ilarione, Montecchia di Crosara, Roncà, Arzignano, Chiampo. From 1959 to 1995 it hosted, at the foot of the mountain, halfway up the mountain and at the top of the mountain, the former military bases where the 67th Remote Controlled Interceptor Group was based. The military base settlements are located in the municipality of Roncà.
Mount Calvarina, together with Mount Crocetta, constituted a majestic active volcanic complex that emerged from the ancient Tethys sea.
In the late middle Eocene, about 40 million years ago, subaerial eruptions of a basaltic nature reached their maximum diffusion; subsequently the activity decreased until it completely disappeared.
Even today, Mount Calvarina is one of the largest subaerial volcanic remnants in the Veronese area, which testifies to the important volcanic activity that occurred in the Cenozoic.
Probably, the shape and height of the volcanic edifice of 40 million years ago were very different from those we observe today, due to a pronounced and continuous erosion caused by atmospheric agents.
Furthermore, the volcanic edifice is a characteristic cone-shaped stratovolcano similar to current Etna, made up of lava and tuff. The lavas show the phenomenon of glassy granulation (hyaloclastites), which occurs when the red-hot mass is suddenly cooled by the water it comes into contact with. Volcanic products can sometimes present stratification due to the reworking carried out by waves and currents.
