Discovered by BMR in 1967 from an aeromagnetic survey, the anomaly named C11. BMR drilled 30 holes into the anomaly in 1972, finding only week Au values. Explored by Peko-Wallsend 1973 to 1988 as Explorer 107. Peko's leases were purchased by Poseidon Gold Pty Ltd, then in 1996 by Normandy Tennant Creek Pty Ltd, then by Giants Reef Mining Ltd in 2001, re-naming Normandy as Santexco, eventually as a wholly owned subsidiary of Emmerson Resources.

Giants Reef identified prior drilling had been at depth, and uncovered only weak Au values. It decided to investigate shallower depths. It was recognised at this point what was now called the Malbec prospect, had a western and eastern lobe, subsequently named Malbec East and Malbec West.

Malbec is a large complex ironstone deposit, as hematite-quartz-magnetite ironstone, mineralisation confined to the sheared chloritic Footwall sedimentary rocks and ironstone. Shallow high grade gold was contained in the western lode.

A small open pit mine was developed at Malbec West by indigenous contractors for Giants Reef Mining, opening in September 2004, with mining completed within a few months. The mine site is one kilometre west of the Chariot mine, 15 kilometres west of Tennant Creek. The mine produced 0.0359 Mt @17.8 g/t Au.
