A cliff line cutting through an outlier of the Permo-Triassic red beds (New Red Sandstone) which lie unconformably on the Carboniferous beds of the Bude Formation, and preserved as two half-graben.
This location yields views of the Peppercombe and Portledge faults, as well as a fine exposure of the Variscan Unconformity which separates the gently-dipping New Red Sandstone form the heavily folded Carboniferous beds below.
The red beds are faulted against the Carbonferous beds at both fault lines.
The hematite-stained cliffs contain a number of interesting features, including calcite-replaced plant fossils; pure, pigment grade, limonite pebbles, occasional mineral crusts and black concretionary nodules associated with iron-reduction patches similar to those of Budleigh Salterton, which are approximately coeval.
The black, concretionary nodules show slightly elevated radioactivity, and a variety of mineral crusts on drying after collection.
The exposure runs for approximately 500m eastward from the beach access path and the wave cut platform may give tantalising glimpses of the red beds at low tide.
This is a public beach with unrestricted access via public footpaths across National Trust land. Both access and walking the beach require some care due to poor footing.
PLEASE NOTE:
The area to the west of Giffard's Jump (the high point adjacent to the Peppercombe fault) and to the north-east of Portledge Mouth (the Portledge Fault) are designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), and collecting/damage to the cliffs is prohibited. The main part of the exposure, however, is not so designated (DEFRA May 2017 - see online references)

Alphabetical List Tree DiagramDetailed Mineral List:
| ⓘ Calcite Formula: CaCO3 Habit: massive, intergrown Colour: transparent, white, cream, red Description: Calcite forms the basis of many of the nodules and th rhizo-concretions at this location.
May be pseudomorphous after gypsum/anhydrite in places. References: |
| ⓘ Erythrite ? Formula: Co3(AsO4)2 · 8H2O Habit: earthy, encrusting Colour: pink Description: Minute, pinkish crusts on black nodules after allowing to dry out thoroughly have been tentatively identified as erythrite as being comparable to the material seen on the similar nodules from Budleigh Salterton. References: |
| ⓘ 'Limonite' Habit: massive Colour: ochre yellow Description: Well-rounded pebbles of pure sulphide minerals have given rise to pure, pigment grade limonite.
Analysis is probably close to pure hydrated Fe(III) hydroxide.
The presence of limonite is significant as all other iron oxides have been converted to nano-particles of hematite as part of the deposition process. References: |
| ⓘ Metatyuyamunite ? Formula: Ca(UO2)2(VO4)2 · 3H2O Habit: bladed, earthy Colour: yellow Description: Seen as minute, yellowish crusts of tiny crystals on the surface of black nodules. Tentatively identified through similarity with the mineral as seen on the Budleigh Salterton nodules. References: |
| ⓘ Metavivianite ? Formula: Fe2+Fe3+2(PO4)2(OH)2 · 6H2O Habit: botryoidal, encrusting Colour: bottle green to greenish-black Description: Seen as bottle-green to greenish-black encrustations on surfaces and within fractures.
Tentatively identified as metavivianite through inference from understood local chemistry and similarity to other occurrances. References: |
| ⓘ Quartz Formula: SiO2 Habit: Massive, prismatic Colour: white, yellowish Description: Many of the clasts comprising the basal conglomerate and subsequent breccias are composed of broken quartz veins.
Isolated crystal ponts may occasionally be found in the breccias. References: |
