Köppen climate type:
Ordinary chondrite, brecciated (H4,br)
Fell,18 April 1838, 8:00 hrs; 1.8 kg
After detonations were heard a single stone was recovered. With its shock-darkened interior Akbarpur is labelled a 'black' chondrite. Olivine composition (Fa19) is characteristic of the H-chondrite geochemical group. Mineralogically the meteorite consists primarily of dominant olivine, somewhat lesser amounts of low-Ca pyroxene along with minor amounts of Fe-Ni metal (kamacite and taenite), and troilite. Accessory chromite and other minor opaques are also reported.
A moderately large U,Th-He age of 2.04 Ga age suggests that Akbarpur has not been involved in any catastrophically energetic collisions in the past 2 billion years. Akbarpur's reported 7.7 Ma cosmic ray exposure (CRE) age appears to be part of a peak in CRE ages for H-group chondrites suggesting that Akbarpur may have been involved in a major collision involving a significant number of recent H chondrite falls.
The H (relatively high in total iron) chondrites are the second largest group of ordinary chondrite falls representing nearly 40% of the well-classified witnessed meteorite falls. The H4 petrologic type represents more than 15% of the H chondrite group. Akbarpur is one of 52 meteorite falls classified exactly as an H4 chondrite (as of May 2017).
The main mass has been kept at the Natural History Museum (London).
