Ordinary chondrite (LL6; S3/4; W0)
Fell, 22 November 2004,~11:45 GMT; 25 kg
A meteorite shower was witnessed to fall near Benguerir (~50 km due north of Marrakesh, Morocco) by many local people. The fall had an east-to-west trajectory. Several stones were recovered almost immediately in or near fresh pits w. depths up to 20 cm. Stones and fragments up to ~4 kg in mass were recovered — many with a blackish fusion crust and occasional regmaglypts. The interior reveals two prominent lithologies — lighter clasts w. larger silicates (>100µm) and darker clasts with smaller but more regular-sized grains. Fe-Ni metal and sulfides are dispersed throughout both lithologies with larger grains present in the lighter clasts. Compositionally, equilibrated olivine (Fa29±1) and low Ca-orthopyroxene (Fs25±1) are characteristic of the LL-chondrite geochemical group. Mineralogically the meteorite consists primarily of dominant olivine accompanied by orthopyroxene with minor plagioclase, diopsidic pyroxene, troilite, and Fe-Ni metal. Accessory chromite and rare copper are also present. In addition, magnetic anisotropy and remanence studies suggest that small tetrataenite grains are almost certainly present. Shock indicators (shock level 3/4) include fractured chromite & silicate grains, sulfide, and metal veinlets, and deformed Neumann bands in kamacite. A few stones recovered in subsequent days and weeks after local rains have been mildly, but noticeably weathered.
The LL meteorites are ordinary chondrites that are relatively very low in total iron with ~50% of the LL falls classified as petrologic type LL6 (well-equilibrated). Benguerir is the 7th most massive of the 44 witnessed falls classified exactly as "LL6" chondrites currently recognized by the Meteoritical Society (as of 21 May 2017).
