Barrow Creek is a road house, hotel, basic camping area, and historic telegraph station, 280 kilometres north of Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway.

Named by explorer John McDouall Stuart, around 1860, after preacher, journalist and South Australian politician John Henry Barrow. It was selected as a site for an overland telegraph repeater station in 1872.

In 1874, men from the local Kaytetye tribe attacked the station, killing station master James L. Stapleton, linesman John Franks, and wounding Ernest Flint. There are suggestions the reason for the attack was the 'mistreatment' of women from the tribe by Europeans in the area, and/or the fencing of the local water hole needed by the tribe during drought. We will never know, as information at the time was always from the perspective of the authorities.

Local policeman, Samuel Gason, set out with a party seeking revenge. Fifty miles to the south, he found an aboriginal camp, with around ninety aboriginal men, women and children massacred. This became known as Skull Creek, for the bleached skulls lying over the ground found for years after.

In 1928, dingo trapper, Fred Brooks was killed by aborigines in the area. William George Murray who was in charge of the local police station, led a party who killed about seventy aborigines in a series of bloody reprisals. He was brought to Darwin charged with mass murder, but was acquitted by the court.

Barrow Creek is surrounded by a series of low northwest to south-east trending hills. The area lies at the border of the Arunta Inlier to the south, and the Tennant Creek/Davenport Province to the north. Its contact shows as a wide north north-west to south south-east corridor of intensely foliated and faulted rocks. This is in part covered by Neoproterozoic aged Georgina Basin sediments, as flat lying sandstone and quartzite. Proterozoic granites intrude along the structural trend.

A sub-economic tantalum-tin pegmatite field is found around 15 kilometres north north-east of Barrow Creek, containing several small short lived mines. The Home of Bullion copper mine is east of Barrow Creek, the deposit rich but small.
