Ordinary chondrite (H6)
Fell, Autumn 1941, 15 hrs; 3.2 kg, single stone
A single stone fell near the source of the Sueh river. Textures and composition of equilibrated Olivine (Fa19) and low Ca-orthopyroxene ('bronzite') in chondrules and matrix are characteristic of H6 ordinary chondrites. Mineralogically the meteorite consists primarily of dominant olivine and orthopyroxene along with minor amounts of Fe-Ni metal (both kamacite and taenite) and troilite. Accessory chromite and copper are also reported.
A Pb,Th:He age of 3.92 Ga and a cosmic-ray exposure (CRE) age of 15.5 Ma are reported.
The H (relatively high in total iron) chondrites are the second largest group of ordinary chondrite falls and represent nearly 40% of well-classified and witnessed meteorite falls. The H6 petrologic type constitutes ~25 % of the group. Maridi is one of 94 meteorite falls currently classified exactly as an H6 [May 2017].
The main mass has been kept at the Museum of the Geological Survey of Sudan (Khartoum). A small fragment (labelled as 'Esu') was obtained by the United States National Museum (Washington).
