The Cairns prospect is 6 kilometres south-east of the Great Davenport gold mine.
It consists of thin quartz, and quartz-hematite-magnetite veins, cutting altered porphyritic granophyre, arenite, and sandstone, of the Kurinelli Sandstone. The quartz reef is at the southern margin of a fault zone up to 15 metres wide.
Two quartz reefs are noted, a maximum of 10 feet wide, length 722 feet, separated 2 to 15 feet by the country rock. Gold is found in both, but significant amounts only in the southern brecciated white quartz vein (the northern vein is not brecciated). There are isolated zones within this of cubic cavities from past sulphides, although little sulphide remains. The reef also shows veins/blebs of talcose hematite.
This high grade area covers a length of 70 feet, in or near the Footwall of the quartz vein. Overall the prospect is low grade for gold at 0.68 dwt, with the high grade section 4.0 dwt.
Mindat map approximate. Later explorers after Geopeko, note the site mis-marked on maps by several hundred metres. See Great Davenport Mine Mindat locality for access details. Once over the creek crossing mentioned in this article, a faint track heading south south-east leaves the road about one kilometre further on. A crossing of the Lennee Creek is needed, the track faint and very difficult to the site, covering about 3 kilometres. A small open cut, costeans and bulldozed areas can be seen.
