The Weka gold prospect is 9 kilometres north-west of the Kurundi pastoral station homestead, and 4 kilometres east of the Power of Wealth gold mine, on the north side of Opal Creek.
The site contains numerous shallow shafts and pits, but there is no record of production. The Kurundi station owner, P. Saint, states the prospect was discovered by local prospector Charles Priester, then was active 1982-1983 by the Weka Mining group. Priester returned in 1984-1985, sinking most of the shallow shafts, the deepest to 2.8 metres.
The lode outcrops as a 220 metre long sheet like quartz vein, 1 to 4 metres thick, capping the north-west side of a low ridge, intruding arenites of the Kurrinelli Sandstone.
The main mass of quartz is hourglass shaped, 220 metres long by 100 metres wide at its widest, and 30 metres at its narrowest. It is abruptly cut off to the east by a fault. A pit at the south-east extremity of the prospect shows quartz with limonite and hematite filled boxworks. Quartz elsewhere is white, and sometimes grey and bluish, coarsely crystalline, with common small cavities to 5 cms in diameter infilled with drusy quartz, and iron oxide encrustation.
The reef is highly fractured in parts, with some zones of brecciation, containing sericitic clay infilling, and iron oxide staining. Gold grades from nil to 6.94 g/t.
