Nearby to the wolfram field, and is usually considered as part of the same location for convenience. Some gold was found in the Pioneer wolfram mine.
The Crystal gold mine is about 5 kilometres north-east of the Pioneer mine. A few scattered shafts, and minor bulldozed areas were seen, 50 to 200 metres west of the Kurundi Road, stretching north-south some 500 metres, and opposite some station buildings which are a short distance east of the road.
Gold was first reported here in 1930, but no production is recorded. The location has produced poor gold assays. By 1950, two shafts are reported, and the site abandoned.
It occupies a low rise of small altered blocks of sedimentary rocks in the Pedlar Gabbro. The quartz reef outcrops intermittently for 1300 feet, of irregular width (1-20 feet), with many thinner reefs.
Hossfield in 1941 took 67 samples from the location, 10 of which were under 1 dwt, 9 at 1-2 dwt, 5 at 2-3 dwt, one was 3.2 dwt, and one at 3.5 dwt, the rest showed no gold. Ryan states the highest gold is found in reefs with limonite, and the narrower reefs.
Ahmad et al. states there are three shafts (satellite evidence seems to confirm this-just north of the station turn-off, and close to the west side of the road. Two appear collapsed). He states it is hosted in dolerite, with en enchelon quartz reefs discontinuous for 400 metres. The veins he states trend north-east, dipping 50 degrees south-east, parallel to the bedding of volcanolithic sandstone (Taragan Sandstone), enclosed within dolerite gabbro sills. No recorded production. He states there are gold rich sections up to 34 g/t, in narrow iron oxide bearing veins. Oral evidence suggests 31.1 kg has been obtained by metal detectors by local prospectors.
