Mistral Mines NL in the 1980's, and Barfuss Corporation Pty Ltd in the 1990's, explored several quartz crystal locations near the Mistral Ruby Mine for gem potential.
The first site is located approximately 4 kilometres west of the Mistral Ruby Mine, near the upper reaches of a Spriggs Creek tributary where it turns sharply north-south to north-west to south-east. No access track could be seen, and the area is rugged and remote. It contains a limited number of clear to semi clear quartz crystals in feldspar and mica, in a small pegmatite
The second location is 500 metres west of the ruby mine camp, and a track from the mine enters the area. It is a small pegmatite of quartz, feldspar and mica, containing clear quartz crystals 10-25 mms long, black mica crystals to 25 mm diameter, schorl as small irregular masses, and crystals to 30 mms long.
The third location is 500 metres east of the mine camp, on the north side of a hill. This contains quartz crystals, book mica, and schorl, with feldspar and mica, in a small pegmatite.
The fourth location is about half way down the north-south line of ruby workings. The small pegmatite is said to be at the top of a hill containing quartz crystals, feldspar, mica, schorl.
Potentially specimens may have been seen in public, but are often labelled 'Harts Range', or 'Entia Valley', and could come from a number of sites across the region. The ruby mine may be under an active lease at any stage.
Mindat map is approximate due to the very basic map supplied with the exploration report, and denotes location 2 described above.
