Active quarry, officially known as Artana B or Quarry no. 177, located on the left side of Colonnata valley, near the mouth of the little side-valley drained by Rio Artana. An abandoned quarry, named Artana A (44°4'41"N, 10°8'43.5"E), is located at an upper elevation.
This marble quarry is characterised by the occurrence of layers of the snow-white, coarse-grained marble "macchia bianca". In their cavities, the most beautiful specimens of sulphur from the Carrara marble district have been found. Sulphur crystals are usually well-developed, transparent and reach few cms in size. In addition, this small quarry has yielded nice specimens of fluorite, sphalerite, wurtzite, colusite, and celestine.
Note: Artana is the modern variant of the toponym Nartana, which was used by the old authors (e.g., Repetti 1820 and 1833; Giampaoli, 1897 and 1905; D'Achiardi, 1906).
