Mica mine. Located approximately 4 kilometres north-east of the Huckitta pastoral station homestead. After the homestead, the track crosses the Plenty River, and immediately divides into three. The north-east trending track goes to the mine, with a compact set of workings bordering the track's southern side, and a couple of minor workings 100 metres north of the track. The northern workings are called Whistleduck, and the southern workings are called New Year (Daly/Dyson). However, (Tate) describes a site called Whistleduck No. 2, alluding there must be a Whistleduck No. 1, which he makes no mention of, and may be referring to the two workings. He states other sources had described the site as the 'main workings', and admits he was heavily reliant on local miners at the time to identify the site. The mines were active in the mid 1950's.
The No. 2 location at least contained an irregular pegmatite intrusion on flat ground, which had produced 6 tonnes of cut mica, valued at 10,000 pounds in 1950's values. There are several shafts with drives at the 27, 38, 50 and 75 feet levels. The pegmatite is 10 feet thick, outcrops little, trends north-east, and dips south-east.
Tates' map indicates a Whistleduck No.1 and a Whistleduck No.3 along with an open cut situated between the two deposits. It can be presumed from Tate's map that the open cut refers to Whistleduck No.2, particularly as the text mentions that the No 2 produced so much mica.
Joklik only refers to the Whistleduck mine in toto and describes shafts No.1 and No.2. Joklik further mentiosn that there are five separate workings on this 10 acre site.
