Palmaiola is an islet (0.08km²) in the Strait of Piombino (Channel of Piombino), about 3 kilometres from Elba Island and 7 kilometres from Piombino. The islet, presently part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, administratively belongs to the comune (municipality) of Rio (Elba Island). The current name of the islet, called Columbaria by the Romans, came into use during the Middle Ages because of the abundance of the Mediterranean dwarf palm (Chamaerops humilis) at that time.
Giuli (1835 and 1843) reported the presence of amethyst crystals, from fissures inside veins of white and concretioned quartz embedded in sandstone of the Macigno formation (Eocene-Oligocene), to the left of the little cove located along the northern shore of the islet.
