Kirkwood is an unincorporated village located in Orange Township, Shelby County. The village was originally named Pontiac, but was later platted as Kirkwood in 1868. The name honors D. Kirkwood Gillespie, who owned a local grain elevator (Sutton, 1883, p. 185, Overman, 1958, p. 71).
