The Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve is located on the Snake River Plain just south of the Sawtooth Mountain Range. It includes a vast area of cinder fields and spatter cones that resulted from volcanic activity along the Great Rift. The Rift runs from northwest to southeast and satellite views of the flows clearly show the trend of the eruptions. The formations here provide some of the best examples of volcanic features in the United States including pahoehoe lava and aa lava. The cinders and basalts often exhibit a beautiful iridescence. The lava fields range in age from 15,000 to 2,000 years and are considered to still be active with the possibility of future eruptions.
