The 309 meter elevation Kabutoyama ("Helmet Mountain"), perhaps named for its domed shape, although Japanese legend claims the name derives from the Empress Jingu (3rd century C.E.) having buried her helmet there after fighting the Silla kingdom in Korea. Granitic boulders on its southern foothills were quarried in the years around 1585 for granite blocks used in building Osaka Castle for the Shogun. "Quarried" may be the wrong term, because the evidence still visible in the forest nowadays is dozens of partially worked but abandoned boulders that represent the "corestones" of spheroidal weathering. Miarolytic cavities exist, but are sparse.
